The makers of Electronic Arts’ next Skate game gave fans an update on development on Monday that still didn’t show any gameplay or answer any basic burning questions. Like, when might this come out? And everyone’s calling it Skate 4, but is that really its official title?

Instead, fans got assurances that Full Circle, the studio formed to handle the sequel, is indeed hard at work on the fourth game, which will likely launch more than a dozen years after Skate 3. Gameplay of the newest Skate does exist, and some folks outside Electronic Arts have seen it, but we only get to see their reactions, not the footage itself. And Skate 4 will not be shown during EA Play this week, which suggests that its launch date is still well off.

Skate 4 was “commented into existence,” creative director Chris “Cuz” Parry said when the game was revealed during EA Play Live 2020. That referred to fans’ informal #skate4 social media campaign for EA to resurrect the series. The last game in the franchise was published in 2010.

“We’ve been waiting years, honestly, to make the right game, at the right time, with the right idea, and — we’re really, really pleased to say that we’re here,” game director Deran Chung said last year.

The Skate series, which strove to deliver a more realistic, sports-simulation style of skateboarding, delivered three games for PlayStation 3 and Xbox 360 between 2007 and 2010. The series was originally developed by EA Black Box, a studio that EA closed in 2013.
