Nvidia announced that it will begin limiting the performance of mining ethereum or any other crypto utilizing its new variety of approaching graphics processing systems (GPUs).
In an article released Feb. 19, the U.S. hardware maker stated this limitation will feature initially on its brand-new Geforce RTX 3060 card, which is scheduled for release on Feb. 25.
Nvidia exposed that the brand-new GPU software drivers are designed to spot particular attributes of the ether (ETH) mining algorithm, and restrict the hash rate, or cryptocurrency mining efficiency, by around 50%.
The software application wont restrict the efficiency of all crypto mining activities, Itpro reported, “with the limiter just activating when procedures utilize Dagger Hashimoto or Ethash-like algorithms.”
The Nasdaq-listed company is hoping that the restriction will discourage the purchase of gaming-oriented graphics cards for big ethereum mining operations. ETH is one of a few coins that can still be mined using graphics cards.
GPUs, which are mainly utilized in computer game consoles, have actually supposedly remained in short supply due to hoarding by ETH miners, producing limitations and supply chain issues arising from the Covid-19 pandemic. Costs have actually skyrocketed, as a result.
” We are players, through and through,” Nvidia stated. “We consume about new gaming features, new architectures, brand-new video games and tech. We created Geforce GPUs for players, and gamers are demanding for more,” it included.
Nvidia exposed that it is planning to produce GPUs particularly targeting ethereum miners called Cryptocurrency Mining Processor (CMP). It stated the new mining processor, due for release in March, will not “do graphics” and will not “fulfill the specifications required of a Geforce GPU and, thus, dont impact the schedule of Geforce GPUs to gamers.”
The firm specified that the CMP “does not have display screen outputs, allowing enhanced airflow while mining so they can be more largely loaded.” CMPs likewise have a lower peak core voltage and frequency, which improves mining power performance, it explained.
