Apple releases macOS update to prevent damage from third-party docks and dongles – The Verge2 min read

Apple is as soon as again launching an update to avoid a charging problem from eliminating MacBooks– this time its to repair a problem where 2019 and later MacBook Pros, and 2020 and later MacBook Airs were being damaged when linked to third-party USB-C hubs and docks (by means of MacRumors).
Its unclear how widespread the problems are, however a poll on Reddit had 74 out of 221 participants report that their M1 Air or Pro had actually failed after using a hub. Similar to all polls, its best to take the results with a grain of salt, but theres an indicator that some people were experiencing concerns.
Most of the problems appeared to come from utilizing a third-party dock, and while a few of them appear to be from quite unknown brand names, there are a few identifiable ones that are reported to have killed laptops. For its part, Apple calls them “non-compliant powered USB-C centers and docks” in the brand-new upgrades notes.

Its a large update, however its most likely best to install it as soon as possible.

It appears like Apple has actually been having some issues with power delivery recently. The last upgrade, 11.2.1, was launched to fix a problem where some users were unable to re-charge their computer systems if they drained to 0 percent battery, it provided a recall for other MacBook Pro batteries that would not charge previous one percent, and another recall for “a really small number” of Apple Watches that wouldnt charge after an upgrade. Hopefully this is the last power bug Apple needs to work out.
If you plug your MacBook into a dock or hub of any kind, its most likely best to download this update as quickly as you can, specifically if its one of those affected designs. Oh, and if you see this message, maybe just make sure youre plugging it in to an official Apple power brick while you do.

This must possibly be done with a first-party power adapter.
